What to do in AprilThe weather seems okay at the moment, not too cold (despite the recent frost and snow). If you are well organised, you may have started sowing some seeds in the greenhouse or even outdoors (protected with cloches or a film of plastic or glass). Here are a few tasks, you may consider for this month. If you are a little behind, there is still time to check if there are any jobs you missed from our tips for March on this page.. |
April jobs- You can now transplant Brussels Sprouts that have been sown earlier in a frame or greenhouse. Don't forget to harden off for a few days before moving.
- Finish planting early potatoes and start preparing the ground for maincrop varieties to plant towards the end of the month.
- Transplant broad beans and peas that have been hardened off over the last few weeks.
- Sow parsley - it is often slow to germinate so it may take a few weeks before you see any results.
- Keep sowing lettuce and salad leaves, carrots, radishes and peas for a continuous crop . - Sow dwarf beans under cloches or in the greenhouse.
- Start a few beetroot - not too many as they are better when young and tender. Instead, continue successional sowing.
- Sow melons and cucumbers in the greenhouse.
- Look at any seedlings that have been sown earlier outdoors, and look at thinning them if necessary.
- Make sure that you hoe between seedlings to keep the weeds at bay.
- Cover carrot seedlings with mesh to deter carrot fly.
- Onion seedlings can be planted out.
- Sow seed of outdoor tomatoes now in the greenhouse. Transplant indoor tomatoes into larger pots, but maintain a constant temperature of 16°C.
- Sow celery and celeriac seeds in the greenhouse.
