Asparagus Fern

There are all types of the nearly 12,000 varieties of ferns found all over the world. They grow from sea-level to the high reaches of mountain ranges. As many people are aware, ferns are descended from some of the oldest plants with examples being found as fossils dating back over 300 million years. Although most varieties if fern are found in the rain forests of the southern hemisphere, their habitats range from coastal areas, freshwater lakes and the semi-deserts of arid climates.

The leaves, or fronds, of ferns are produced in an amazing range of shapes and sizes. Some are undivided, others are so finely dissected that they resemble lace; and they range in length from a few millimetres to over seven metres long.

The Asparagus Fern will grow to a height of around 50cm and has wiry foliage in dark green sprays. It should be sown under glass from April until August and transplanted then the plant reaches around 10cm in height. This should take between 6-8 weeks. The fern should ideally be in a sheltered area but if open to very cold weather then protect them during the coldest of the winter months.
