Basil The smell of basil is reminiscent of Summer and yet in can be grown all year round indoors, such as on the kitchen windowsill, so excellent for fresh and flavoursome herbs! The Italians use basil in much of their cuisine, especially with tomatoes, or in a pesto sauce with pasta.
As basil goes so well with tomatoes it will not surprise you to know that they also complement each other in the vegetable plot. As both plants like good soil, plenty of water during their growing periods and direct sunshine it is a good idea to try an grow them together. However as basil takes a few weeks to mature you don't want to be sowing outside much later than the start of June to allow both growing and eating time before the first frosts which will kill any plants growing outside. To maximise the leaf growth pick off any flowers and keep the soil damp.
If you grow basil during the Summer, it is very easy to keep it for Winter use. Just chop the fresh basil leaves finely and put into ice cube trays with a dot of water and freeze in cubes, then use the cubes in soups and sauces all year round! Otherwise be sure to harvest all of your basil before the first frost, make your tomato sauce and freeze it which will give you the fresh taste all winter.
