Cabbage seeds for the Bacalan of Rennes produce a famous variety of cabbage native to France. It grows with a conical shaped head and good, firm, dark green leaves. The Bacalan will adapt to most types of soil so can be grown in most places with not too much trouble. It does prefer a little clay in the soil and maybe even slightly acidic.

Sow the cabbage seeds from February until May and during August and September and you will have a crop from May right the way through until late September. In colder months sow undercover and when transplanting (or when sowing direct) ensue the stems are planted deep and around 10cm between plants and rows. If you are transplanting a second time then keep around 40cm between plants. Each packet contains 3-grammes of seed which is approximately 70-80 seeds.
