Everyone knows the blue cornflower, reminiscent of summer meadows. This is a cornflower with a difference, its pale lilac-mauve flowers giving more sophistication than its country cousin. Grown in a sunny border, the stately ‘Mauve Queen’ will shine, especially next to darkleaved companions, its spherical fully double blooms bobbing around on top of long, wiry stems. Gathered in large bunches, it is useful for flower arrangements, and the flowers can also be used as an astringent herb that reduces inflammation, used externally for minor wounds, conjunctivitis and mouth ulcers.
