The Gran Gigante is a giant pumpkin variety that has been included in the Guinness Book of Records. Cucurbita maxima can grow to a very large size so make sure you are prepared and allow approximately 7m2 per plant. As these pumpkins will grow very large they also grow very quickly, these are only 3-4 weeks old so as you can see they are quite desperate to grow.

The Gran Gigante seeds should be sown under glass between March and May. Plant them 2-3cm deep and allow 6-10 days for germination to take place. For the best results keep the air temperature between 18-24C during germination. If sowing directly outside then plant between May and June.

If you want to go for a 'big boy' then leave plenty of space and limit one fruit per plant and maximum growth should be reached in around 130 days. Otherwise transplant the seedlings and allow 3.5 meters between rows and 2 meters between plants. You will be harvesting the fruit from October until December. To maximise the fruit size provide good soil, sunshine and plenty of water.
