Red CloverSow these seeds over the empty areas of your plot for many uses: Keep the empty soil attractive to the eye, deter weeds, attract pollinating wildlife and add nutrients to the soil. Have a productive plot all year!
Trifolium pratense, the Red Clover is a very popular plant to both improve your soil and be used as a feed for animals. The Red Clover is known as a Green Manure as the crop is grown on a piece of ground and it feeds the soil. It can then be fed to animals and is a very good source of protein, dug back into the soil or pulled.
The powerful tap root of this variety will loosen the soil and numerous tiny root nodules will increase the levels of nitrogen within the soil. Red Clover is a fully hardy plant so it can be grown as a perennial as well as an annual.
The seeds should be sown from March until September approximately 1-2cm deep and germination takes between 10-20 days. It does like a sunny position but is quite happy in partial shade. It likes all soil types and will thrive in lesser soils. |
