Nicandra physalodes The Nicandra physalodes is very popular and successful flowering plant popular not just for the beautiful flowers but also because of the resistance it offers against 'White Fly' which is a common pest especially among tomato, cucumber and peppers plants. In addition to the colourful heads the leaves have small and unusual spikes on them which just add to the beauty of this flower.
The seeds for the Nicandra should be sown from March until May, in pots and under glass. Germination will normally take between 2 - 3 weeks. Flowering of the blue/purple, bell shaped heads will start in June and finish with the arrival of the first frosts
In the UK tomato, cucumbers and pepper plants are normally grown under glass so keep the Nicandra in their pots and have one placed every 2-3 meters among your plants. If growing your fruit outside then the Nicandra should be planted every 3-4 meters among the plants.
