Peas Peas have been part of the European garden for many hundreds of years originally used as grown as they can be stored very well but now grown and eaten for their fantastic, sweet taste. One serving of peas contains only around 50 calories (this depends on the amount of butter you serve with them!), provides a quarter of the daily vitamin C requirement and contain folate, fibre and phosphorus. However the longer the peas are cooked then the more goodness is lost .
Peas like a good, fertile soil that drains well and not too much water until the plant starts to show flowers. Until this time it is better to underwater and too much water will ruin the seed and kill off your crop chances. If planting under cover then better to sow in pots as each seed will grow a long, central root before forming any major amounts of secondary roots. At this stage it is better to allow the seed to grow in 'damp' compost, as opposed to watered, and try to keep it damp rather than watering and allowing the compost to dry.
Peas can be sown directly outside as the cold is not an issue for many varieties however slugs may be and they love the young pea seedlings. This may be the reason why you decide to sow under cover.
