Artichoke seeds for the Romanesco produce a very popular heirloom variety of artichoke with silvery-grey leaves and medium-sized bronze and violet tinged globes that are large and very tasty with tender, fleshy bracts. This variety of artichoke is quite happy with the colder weather but best not to grow in a very open position, give it a little protection from the worst of the winter winds.The Romanesco is an artichoke that likes soil that will drain so please do not plant in an area where its roots will sit in compact, wet soil. If this is your soil type then break it and add some soil improver to soften the soil and improve drainage. SOW: broadcast or in rows from February to April. QUANTITY: 4-5 seeds per hole in open field, average 75 seeds per standard packet.TRANSPLANT: Autumn.
