Strawberry Seeds We all know that strawberries that we grow ourselves are obviously so much fresher than those bought in the shops but also much tastier. They are a very good source of vitamin C and indeed have higher levels of vitamin C than any other berry.
Strawberries are very easy to grow, they normally like good fertile soil however we have always found that they will grow in virtually any type of soil as long as they don't become waterlogged and get plenty of sun. The hardest thing is to keep the birds away from the fruit. We have always found that just shouting at them will do no good as they tend to start about 4:30 every morning. Growing the ground varieties in the middle of flower beds is a good idea as the birds can't see the fruit, otherwise some netting is very good however you have to make sure that it is well staked or a bird will manage to get under the net. They will then find it quite hard to get out but they are not too worried as they will just spend their time eating your fruit.
As the strawberry is a herbaceous plant it will 'shut-down' in the winter months before springing back to life as soon as the air and ground start to warm. They are self propagating and throw out long, hard runners (a little like a Spinder Plant) that grow small plants and roots. The host plant will continue to give fruit for many years however the volume and quality of the fruit will diminish after the first couple of years.
