The sunflower is surely one of the best known and loved flowers of all time. Throughout the ages it has always been an icon, from Incan times, when it was a symbol of the sun god, to the 19th century, when it was immortalised in Vincent van Gogh's paintings. But the humble sunflower has evolved enormously since van Gogh's time, with cultivars in all different shades and sizes. 'Lemon Queen' is a different take on the traditional deep yellow sunflower, with two-tone, pale yellow flowers that really shine out in the border. Putting on a spectacular show for many weeks during the summer, the plant can be left to fade gracefully during autumn, the seedheads providing winter sustenance for garden birds.
