Tetragonia or New Zealand spinach is not technically a spinach but its succulent leaves are used as such in many dishes as the taste is very similar and is sometimes called sea spinach.

This is a variety that is very easy to grow as it can tolerate drought (so good for light soils in sunny locations) and it is prolific with few natural pests and diseases, so a good alternative to regular spinach. Tetragonia is usually grown as an annual in this country but is grown as a perennial in warmer climates or if protected from frost. New Zealand spinach can be eaten raw or cooked. Ideal for salad or lasagne! It is full of vitamins A, B and C.
